Alden bids farewell to “Mrs. Smith’s Posy Patch”! By Priscilla Miller
Mrs. Smith’s Posy Patch, will soon become just another “remember when” memory for Alden because by next summer the space in the center of town will have been swept clean of pumpkins, straw and decorations. The painted out houses and the old stove will be gone to make room for “Smith’s Village Park.”
After gaining approval from the Smith family, owners of the property, the Alden Volunteers are sponsoring a redesign of the area. Cosponsoring the project are DABA (Downtown Alden Business Association) and the Juniper Garden Club. Sandy Bodenbender is project chairperson and designer of the plans for transforming the area into a park like setting, using soft earth tone colors. The cement floor and sides will be painted a dark tan. The center trellis will be repainted a light tan and moved to the back right corner of the new park. A 10 x14 stage will be located nearby allowing for entertainment during Alden Strolls and other venues. A variety of dwarf flowering trees and larger, mature trees planted in wooden containers, will offer soothing shade on hot summer days and plantings of flowers will add splashes of color.
Maintenance free picnic tables with attached seating similar to those at the Afterloon Delights, along with park benches and arbors will provide a place of respite. A place to sit, while waiting for a spouse to finish shopping, to enjoy a picnic lunch with friends or perhaps savor an ice cream cone from Higgin’s Store.
Sandy says, “At this time the new park affords families and organizations with a wonderful opportunity to purchase a tree or bench “In Memory” of a loved one and if at sometime in the future the owners should decide to sell the property all of the items can be relocated to Tennis Court or Depot Parks.
